Director Report: Spike Lee

Introducing my latest creation, the KBJ (Kevin Brown Joint)!

For my Basic Directing project, I decided to delve into the world of talented filmmakers, and who better to spotlight than the one and only Spike Lee.

This visual report traces Lee's filmography journey, spanning from his small-budget student films to his Oscar-winning blockbusters. Through carefully selected clips from iconic films like "She’s Gotta Have It," "Do the Right Thing," and "BlacKkKlansman," I aimed to capture the essence of Lee's evolution as a filmmaker and the impact of his work on cinema.

Welcome to Visual/Sound Projects!

Zoom Call Gone Wrong

I tackled a unique concept in my latest project inspired by a scene from the 1988 film "Big."

Ever felt afraid to share a secret? Imagine if that secret was being a 12-year-old boy trapped in a 30-year-old body. While I may not have Tom Hanks' star power, I managed to recreate the scene using a modern medium, diving into the awkward dynamics with humor and a contemporary twist.

Let's just say, Susan had quite a rough night and might be reconsidering her Zoom habits from now on.

How To with Kevin Brown

For my Documentary Studies class, I embarked on a project that intertwined clips from Michael Moore's "Roger & Me," Elizabeth Lo's "Stray," and the stylistic influence of HBO's "How to with John Wilson," all while narrating it with my own voice. By incorporating authentic footage of real people and adopting their editing styles, I aimed to blend humor with poignant storytelling.

It was a fascinating exploration of documentary techniques and storytelling methods, allowing me to experiment with different approaches to convey meaningful messages with a touch of humor.

Paper Bag

I had a blast putting together a lighthearted story to accompany Fiona Apple's "Paper Bag," using jump cuts and playful editing to add humor and charm. Shooting this project was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed injecting some humor into the simple tale of a young man on a quest.

While some might read deeper meanings into it, for me, it was just a fun and enjoyable project to work on, courtesy of my Basic Cinematography class.

Sound Project

Crafting a spoof podcast about the idea of "the show must go on" was a total blast. We got to let loose and have some fun with it, all while incorporating our own recorded sound effects to tell the story. So, we took that idea and ran with it, creating a light-hearted take on what happens when things go a bit sideways but you still gotta keep the show rolling.
